criticism

“In our school system we learn how to criticize, not construct.”  — Julia Cameron

That quote hit me deep.

I was taught what was wrong with movies, music, stories.

But I wasn’t taught how to make them.

Were you?

I think I spend most of my time trying to unlearn all the critical programming I grew up with. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a place for discernment. Grammar. Story structure. All that.

But too many rules, too much criticism can stifle. And I’m just hoping to break free.
